The National Weather Service estimated that most of the U.S.'s 330 million people were under various weather warnings Thursday morning — a who's who of winter maladies, from blizzards, snow squalls and ice storms to high winds, wind chill and hard freezes.
, about more than 500 flights — about a quarter of all flights in or out of the airport — were canceled Thursday. Nearly 200 more were delayed.
City officials stressed that crews were working around the clock to keep flights moving at the city's major airports, O'Hare and Midway, both of which serve as hubs for major airlines. "We're very hardy here," said Lisa Carter, who operates a snowmobile rental business in West Yellowstone."We deal with cold like this all the time. We're not doing anything extra because we're used to it. We just don't go outside."
