Marvel's grim future timeline of 2099 just got even darker, as a mysterious new group of villains known as the Cabal not only slaughtered the Avengers, but made the entire world watch.
Marvel 2099 is an imprint launched in 1992 which featured stories set in a dystopian, cyberpunk-influenced future where megacorporations rule the world and North America is a cruel police state. The most successful character was Spider-Man 2099, the first"superhero" to appear in this age, who fought against the ruthless corporation called Alchemax. The character was so successful that Spider-Man 2099 is set to appear in Across The Spider-Verse.
At the end of the issue, the Cabal's founder is revealed as the 2099 version of Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin, which means that the group's name is a reference to Osborn's original Cabal in Marvel's core timeline . This was a council of the most powerful villains in the world, assembled during Norman Osborn's infamous Dark Reign as the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., and it included Loki, Doctor Doom, Hood, Namor, and Emma Frost.
One version of the 2099 Avengers did make an appearance, in fact, but it was in another reality, one of the domains of Battleworld, the world created by God Emperor Doom with the fragments of what little remained of the Multiverse after the Incursions created by the Marvel's most powerful villains, the Beyonders.
