GoPuff, a billion-dollar delivery app popular among college students looking for beer and junk food, is now bringing groceries to healthcare workers

Pre-Pandemic, Select Legacy Brands Leaned Into Online Retail. Will It Help Them Weather Current Store Closures?

GoPuff has been largely overlooked as a player in grocery delivery, despite its vast network in 170 cities and GoPuff was started in 2013 by Yakir Gola and Rafael Ilishayev when they were juniors at Drexel University in Philadelphia. It began offering late-night delivery on convenience store items like snacks and energy drinks to college kids. It expanded rapidly into dozens of college towns and quietly raised $750 million from SoftBank in 2019. Today, it offers more than 2,500 items, including cleaning supplies, over-the-counter medications and baby products.
