The family still makes choices with the same conviction. When Hairston made the Texans’ active roster and bought his new townhouse, Troy Sr. decided to move to Houston and help his son begin his new life. He drove 20 hours straight from Detroit. They went to Wal-Mart and bought another mattress. They threw it down on the guestroom floor. They set up another lawn chair in Hairston’s room and sat side by side watching game film.

After Hansen left, after Hairston turned out the lights and lay on the mattress, the emptiness of the room overpowered him. There was a frightening sense of nothingness, of loneliness, of silence.
It was nearly 1 a.m. when he finally drifted asleep. His last thought was that there’s a blessing in the bigness of his new home, the largest he’s ever known. It’s big enough to house a family. Big enough to frame his Central Michigan college jerseys on the wall. Big enough to build a ping-pong table smack dab in the middle of his living room, where he can practice and sneak up on the Texans teammates who champion the table in their locker room.
