HBCU romances have been at the heart of popular shows like “A Different World” and movies like “Drumline,” and more recently in “All American: Homecoming.” But HBCU love stories and couples also abound in real life. BlackJoyReckon shares their stories:
met at Prairie View A&M University about nine years ago. Kayla is a dancer that found her way to engineering after dislocating her knee in high school. She chose to attend PVAMU for its renowned engineering program and received a full-ride scholarship offer, which she says " made the decision very easy to attend the best HBCU in the land!” For David, attending PVAMU was about family legacy and was his No. 1 choice.
“Shut up,” were the first words out of his mouth. Rebecca gawked back at Mose Jr. insulted until he put a big bright smile on his face. His smile caught her attention and made her fall for Mose Jr. that day on campus, and the same smile and love has kept them married for almost 50 years. “She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind and knew what she wanted in life, even back in high school. Her mind is what attracted me to her,” says Andre about how he knew Tashika was the one. The two went on to attend Grambling State University, where Tashika majored in nursing and Andre in business management. Their fondest times at their HBCU were at the football stadium, specifically the tailgate area, where they made memories with their respective Greek organizations, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic and having to take a step back from in-person campus activities, Alex kept in touch with Symone While he long had feelings for her, he decided in 2021 to put them into action by asking Symone on their first date to Texas Roadhouse. Once she agreed, their friendship quickly grew into a relationship. “The secret sauce to our love is the friendship. If you are going to be with someone, you need to have a friendship before a relationship,” Alex said.
