Guinga, the revered Brazilian composer and guitarist, will return to Bay Area to perform in Oakland, Berkeley, San Jose and Santa Cruz.
Long before Guinga made his first album as a leader many of the most influential and beloved artists in Brazil had recorded his music.
“I had an immense repertoire under my belt when I started recording as a solo artist,” he said, speaking in Portuguese. “But I made a promise to myself that I’d only record new things. I love to compose. I’m obsessed with composing, composing, composing.” Guinga also performs concerts at Kuumbwa on Sept. 7 and San Jose’s Hammer Theatre Sept. 8 with reed expert Nailor “Proveta” Azevedo, a founding member of São Paulo’s celebrated Banda Mantiqueira, as special guests with Santa Cruz vocalist, composer, pianist and percussionist Claudia Villela.
