“The Gregory Gift,” opening Feb. 16 at New York’s Frick Collection, features decorative art treasures
Joseph Coscia Jr./The Frick CollectionThe art collector Alexis Gregory used to spend so much time at New York’s Frick Collection when he was young that he jokingly told people he lived there. So it’s fitting that when he died in 2020, at the age of 83, he bequeathed a major collection of 28 decorative artworks to the museum. “The Gregory Gift,” on view at the Frick beginning Feb.
Art “bubbled out of Alexis’s background,” says Frick director Ian Wardropper. Born in Switzerland in 1936, Gregory grew up in a family where cultural stars like Arthur Rubinstein and Salvador Dalí were regular guests. He began collecting art as a teenager and went on to establish the well-known art publisher Vendome Press, while writing books on travel and history.
