US Soccer is considering hiring a new head coach for the United States Men’s National Team, and one name on the list is no other than the famous former Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho.The current interim head coach is Anthony Hudson, while Gregg Berhalter remains under investigation for a domestic violence incident from 31 years ago, and is facing a tight situation. His team just lost to Serbia 2-1.
The U.S. Men’s National Team opened their 2026 World Cup cycle with a 2-1 loss against Serbia in a match that featured eight international debuts for the US side, the highest total in one match since 1992. The young squad, averaging just over 23 years of age, put up a strong performance with an attack led by forwards Brandon Vázquez and Cade Cowell.Despite the loss, the USMNT showed promise in their attack and came close to equalizing in the second half. Goalkeeper Gaga Slonina, at just 18 years old, became the youngest goalkeeper to ever play for the USMNT and made multiple quality saves in the first half.
The Portuguese has a successful coaching tenure and has won trophies at every club he has managed except for Tottenham. He also has experience in leading a team to win tournaments, having won the treble with Inter Milan in the 2009/10 season. With the US as one of the co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup, hiring Mourinho could lead the host nation to win the tournament for the first time in 28 years.While it may be ambitious to win the World Cup, Mourinho’s experience and fiery personality could provide valuable guidance for a young USMNT squad and help them make waves at the tournament.
