A federal prosecutor has opened an investigation into what he referred to as “complete inaction” by police commanders in Brasília
Save time by listening to our audio articles as you multitaskThousands of supporters of Jair Bolsonaro, the country’s former president, broke into government buildings and demanded that their hero, a right-wing populist who lost an election last year, be reinstated. The insurrection occurred a week after the inauguration of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the leftist who won that election.
The insurrection echoed, and was inspired by, the storming of the United States Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump on January 6th 2021. In the Brazilian Senate rioters climbed onto a stage and slid down it as if they were in a playground. In the Supreme Court they ripped a door from a justice’s quarters and hoisted it in the air like a trophy. Police eventually used tear-gas and pepper spray to disperse the rioters.
Lula’s government is unlikely to change cops’ political preferences. But it can root out commanders and officers who are shown to have neglected their duty to protect, thus sending a message that cops must uphold the law impartially.
