The sisters had been at odds with one other ever since they learned that Lily was a witch, and the series' first book revealed that they hadn't talked in the years leading up to Lily Potter's death.
Since Lily and James had attended Petunia and Vernon's wedding , Petunia had only cut off contact with her sister about three years before Lily's murder. This means that despite what was implied by the characters' ages in the Harry Potter movies, the severing of this sibling relationship was relatively fresh. The shorter time frame here makes it seem more possible that Petunia wouldn't have given her sister the silent treatment forever.
