A volunteer carries a beagle puppy to meet his foster family at Anderson Humane shelter on Aug. 9, 2022, in South Elgin. According to spokesperson Juliann Carlson, 91 male beagle puppies between 6 months and 10 months arrived from Virginia where they were part of 4,000 beagles rescued from a research facility.

With the caravan arriving back in South Elgin after midnight, staff and volunteers worked overnight to get the the animals evaluated and vaccinated so they could be picked up Tuesday morning, Daubert said. If the gentle puppy is anything like Moore’s own beagle, who loves long walks and is a “good family dog,” 8-month-old Pastrami will make an ideal pet for some family, she said.Tanya Moore, a volunteer at Anderson Humane animal shelter in South Elgin, gets kisses from “Pastrami,” the beagle puppy she was taking home to foster from among 91 the shelter took in after the federal government confiscated them from Envigo, a breeding and research facility in Cumberland, Virginia.

“It will be great to give one of these beagles a new lease on life and the opportunity to be a dog,” Carlson said.
