AUSTIN, Texas — A vehicle driven by a suspected human smuggler crashed head-on Wednesday into an oncoming SUV while trying to elude police, killing eight people, authorities say.
A news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety identified the two occupants of the Chevrolet SUV as Jose Lerma, 67, and Isabel Lerma, 65, of Dalton, Georgia. Six people, including five people from Honduras, were killed in the smuggler’s vehicle, a Honda passenger car, the DPS says. Their identities have not been released.
The crash occurred at about 6:30 a.m. on U.S. 57 near Batesville, Texas. The 21-year-old driver of the Honda, a Houston resident, was being pursued by a patrol car from the Zavala County Sheriff’s Office when the Honda tried to pass a tractor-trailer in a no-passing zone. The head-on crash caused the SUV to burst into flames, the DPS says. It was unclear how fast the vehicles were going, but photos provided by law enforcement show both were mangled.
