The request, filed Wednesday afternoon, came only hours before a dozen crash victims’ families are set to appear in federal court Thursday in Fort Worth.
A pair of deadly crashes of Boeing 737 Max jets led to a worldwide grounding of the plane for 18 months. On the eve of a court hearing in Fort Worth, relatives of victims killed in two Boeing 737 Max crashes are asking for a trio of court-imposed conditions before the plane manufacturer could be released from its plea deal with the government that let it avoid prosecution.
Boeing’s 2021 agreement with the Justice Department required the maker of the 737 Max to plead guilty to defrauding federal regulators and, including a $243.6 million penalty and $500 million to families of the nearly 350 people killed in the 2018 and 2019 crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia. Wednesday’s filing by the families suggests three court-imposed conditions for Boeing to meet before it could be released from its existing deal: commit no new crimes, work with an independent corporate monitor tasked with evaluating Boeing’s compliance with the plea deal, and publicly disclose those compliance efforts.
