A six-story mixed-use residential building is planned to take its place.
The project, called Block 21, proposes 180,000 square feet of offices and 111 housing units on 500 East 3rd Ave. . The City Council unanimously approved the project at its recent meeting — an approval the project needed because it exceeds height restrictions.
The building will feature a “contemporary” architecture style, 402 parking spaces and 151 bike spaces. “Once this is done, San Mateo is going to be a better place, and I’m not talking about tax revenue or homes. I’m talking about utilizing this property,” Councilmember Eric Rodriguez told the San Mateo Daily Journal.
All 40 property owners currently at the site planned for Block 21 have agreed to sell, including an adult book store, an Arco gas station, a check cashing store and Wing Fat Restaurant. Wing Fat first opened in 1958 and is best known for its barbecue pork.
