SINGAPORE - Six school bus operators have been allowed to hire more foreign drivers for two years, after the Ministry of Education announced in June that operatorsApplications were assessed based on the extent of the operator’s participation in serving the schools, as well as its commitment to recruiting local drivers, MOE said in response to queries.

Besides allowing selected operators to hire more foreign drivers, other measures by MOE to tackle the manpower crunch include having common pick-up and drop-off points to shorten journey times. Mr Lim added: “Imagine if you are already in your 60s. Are you going to risk half a million just for a temporary solution?”

Mr Lim added that the ministry is, in effect, inviting operators to bid for more school bus contracts in order to qualify for higher foreign worker quotas.
