SDSU's offense needs to be productive for the Aztecs to have a chance to beat the Bruins for the first time
San Diego State could have had its best practices of the season this week for Saturday’s game against UCLA, but still not be prepared for the Bruins.“The biggest challenge on our whole team is there’s a huge difference in speed between the team we played last week and the team we play this week,” SDSU head coach Rocky Long said.“There were some times on defense last week where they bounced it outside and we just ate them up. We ran them down and tackled them for no gain.
The O-line had its struggles last week in both pass and run blocking, this after the switch to the spread formation supposedly was going to simplify their assignments. Weber State often loaded the box with seven or eight players. UCLA can be expected to do the same thing, unless the Aztecs can prove themselves in the passing game.There may be more depth at running back than any other position on SDSU’s roster, although the Aztecs weren’t eager to test it this early in the season.
If it is deemed Washington can’t go, expect sophomore Jordan Byrd to get several of his carries. Byrd, SDSU’s quickest back, rushed five times for 50 yards in the first half against Weber State while Washington was out of the game.
