, and opt for formulas that forgo stripping and drying ingredients, like surfactants, alcohol and strong actives, to protect the skin barrier. Reduce how much you exfoliate each week, too. The gentler your routine, the better.“A healthy skin barrier ensures that skin stays hydrated and smooth, instead of parched and flaky,” says Dr Granite.
Other barrier-boosting ingredients to incorporate into your routine when skin is dry include niacinamide, panthenol, glycerin and hyaluronic acid. “Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that’s produced naturally by our bodies,” says Dr Granite. “It’s a great one to include because it also traps moisture and prevents transepidermal water loss, which increases the overall water content within the skin.”
