About $477 million in unclaimed funds is owed to residents and businesses in Cuyahoga County, the most of any county in Ohio, according to the state's Department of Commerce Division of Unclaimed Funds. Ohioans can find and file a claim on the Department's website.
In total, the Department’s Division of Unclaimed Funds is currently holding $4 billion owed to residents and businesses throughout Ohio, with about 12% of that belonging to Cuyahoga County. Unclaimed funds are forgotten or lost money that banks and businesses report to the Division after accounts become inactive, typically between three to five years, according to the department. The money comes from inactive checking or savings accounts, final paychecks, unknown insurance claims, forgotten utility deposits, or stocks and bonds.Beyond the top five, five of the top 10 counties were located in northeast Ohio, in addition to Cuyahoga and Summit.
