Four black bears were killed in Ringwood, New Jersey, over the weekend, authorities told NJ Advance Media.allowing a bear hunt across New Jersey as soon as next month, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Assistant Commissioner David Golden said an investigation into the Ringwood incident is ongoing.
Bear hunts have been illegal in New Jersey since 2021, and have been banned on state property — which accounted for about 40% of the bears killed during the hunts — since 2018. DEP spokesman Larry Hajna said Tuesday that Fish and Wildlife Conservation police officers received a complaint of four dead black bears in the small borough in Passaic County Sunday evening. Hajna did not comment further.
Asked about additional details, Golden — who said the bears were cubs— said more information is expected to be released Wednesday. While Tuesday’s vote advanced a rule to allow a statewide bear hunt in December, cubs under 75 pounds can’t be killed and neither can bears traveling in family packs with cubs below 75 pounds. Gov.
