Though Arbery was gunned down on Feb. 23, it took authorities 74 days to make an arrest in the case, and only after video of the shooting was released and widely shared on the internet. Authorities had initially declined to arrest and bring charges against the McMichaels, who told police after the shooting that it was a case of mistaken identity, falsely identifying Arbery as a suspect in a string of local break-ins., saying he stood over Arbery’s body after the shooting and called him a “f——— n——,” and had a long history of using racial slurs in the past.charges in the case, at the request of the Georgia Attorney General.
The McMichaels, who were arrested May 7, and Bryan, who was arrested May 21, are all currently being held in a Glynn County jail without bond.Arbery would regularly jog through the Santilla Shores neighborhood where he was killed, according to testimony at the hearing, and regularly had conversations with at least one neighbor.
