Resilience is a fine quality to have and helps in coping with stress, recovering more quickly from adversity, and living a healthy life. Luckily, we can actively build our stress resilience.
The next time stress occurs, no matter if it’s at work or home, try to stop what you’re doing. You could even say the word “STOP” out loud. Afterwards, you set your timer on your phone to 2 minutes . During these 2 minutes, you’ll speak to yourself as you would speak to your best friend when he or she encounters a stressful situation. Once the 2 minutes have passed, you take the tasks or whatever it was that you stopped doing, one by one and you’ll simply do your best, which is already a lot.
The stress hormone cortisol can actually decrease when you hug someone. There are several studies that confirm this, and hopefully you’ve experienced it yourself already as well. If not, give it a try. And if no loved one is around when your stress level increases, call a loved one, think of a loved one or have a picture of them on your desk.Mens sana in corpore sano.
Physical activity can also look very different to different people: there are the avid runners who know exactly that all they need when stress hits the fan is a good run – short or long. In case you don’t belong to this group, there are other alternatives: have you ever stopped andmaybe? Or what about doing some jumping jacks or stretches? This is even possible in office attire and doesn’t take too much time either.
