Carver Nadjiwon-Foster lives in the Ottawa area but his family is from the Cape Croker First Nation. The 22-year-old said he joined the IPTP because he wants to work in law enforcement, either for a federal agency like the RCMP or a provincial one like the Ontario Provincial Police.

There isn’t a huge RCMP presence in Ontario, he noted, so diving into the world of the Mounties was an interesting experience, he said. He quickly recognized the discipline needed: fitness requirements including six workouts a week, dusting, ironing, pressing the uniform and more.Article content Retired police officer James Pratt addressed a troop of 25 pre-cadets who took part in their graduation ceremony from the Indigenous Pre-Cadet Training Program at RCMP Depot Division on Friday, June 2, 2023.Cpl. Maureen Greyeyes-Brant, national coordinator for the IPTP, was a graduate of the IPTP in 1999. She said since the program started in 1994, about two-thirds of a graduated troop will apply to the organization, though not all will be successful.

For Greyeyes-Brant, the IPTP was an opportunity to do something for her Indigenous community and to help people find “their forever careers.” Also, across Canada in Indigenous communities, people “need to see themselves in us,” Greyeyes-Brant said.Article content
