Reinventing a classic to face the future is no simple task. Has BMW pulled it off?
must split the difference—and, thus, perfectly encapsulate the inimitable BMW spirit. Now, the 5 Series has gone fully electric, a move as likely to perturb loyalists as it is to allure drivers seeking an upscale EV that's not just another Tesla. This is the 2024 BMW i5: a car that BMW absolutely has to get right.
Every 2024 i5 model is equipped with an 81.2-kWh lithium-ion battery. Two powertrain configurations are offered: the i5 eDrive40, which has a single rear motor spinning out 335 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque normally, or 317 lb-ft when Sport Boost or launch control functions are activated. Currently the highest-spec model in the range is the i5 M60 xDrive. Its front and rear motors combine to crank out 593 hp and 549 lb-ft, which temporarily jumps to 605 lb-ft in sporty settings.
Starting off in the i5 eDrive40, an impression of smoothness became immediately apparent: Initial tip-in on the accelerator pedal is wonderfully soft. This tuning makes it nearly impossible to inadvertently jerk the car, although this i5 moves swiftly when it's asked to: 0-60-mph acceleration is estimated at 5.7 seconds. Power delivery isn't soas in some EVs, nor is motor regeneration and one-pedal driving functionality so acute, but these actions are both luxuriously gradual.
