Luxury automakers such as Audi and Mercedes are seeking to beat Tesla at the SUV EV game. But are their new EVs, like the Q8 E-Tron and EQE SUV, any good?
arrived on the scene, luxury car customers finally had a couple of attractive, all-electric-powered alternatives to the semi-ubiquitous Mercedes-Benz S-Classes and Audi Q7s of the world. Now that Tesla is the dominant player not only in the high-end EV space but arguably in the luxury market as a whole, its once-exotic models have become in many ways the norm.
The Q8 E-Tron also rides and handles like a contemporary gas-powered Audi, with a soft, somewhat busy on-road demeanor and pleasantly light steering. In its Dynamic drive mode, the Audi is quicker to have its stronger rear motor deliver the power, lending it a somewhat more dynamic cornering feel versus the standard drive mode—though if you push it too much, as with Audi's other non-RS products, you'll be greeted by understeer as the nose washes out.
The ride and brakes of the Mercedes also raised some flags. Without a fancy air suspension system like the Audi , the low-slung and firm-riding EQE bounces off road imperfections, sending primary and secondary impacts reverberating through the cabin as the electric SUV struggles to settle itself. On the braking front, though the EQE's feel is more natural than the Audi's, we loathe how the brake pedal is moved out from under your foot in its most aggressive regenerative brake setting.
