NFL scouts focus on the body of work. That being said, when a prospect puts something new on tape, a reevaluation is needed. How did both thrilling CFP semifinals help or hurt different NFL hopefuls' draft stock?
Ringo is one of the toughest prospects to figure out in this draft cycle. He is elite from a size/speed standpoint, but he doesn’t play with enough anticipation in coverage. On multiple occasions, Harrison created separation with his route movements, and Ringo strained to recover and react. Ringo is also very inconsistent finding the football, and Ohio State wasn’t shy about attacking him ., but he won’t be that high in my next update.
That said, had Ringo been beaten over the top several times on vertical routes or given up big plays on jump balls — the kinds of situations I expect him to win every time — I would be a little faster at sounding the alarm bells. Right now, he’s just another name on the mantle of Marvin Harrison Jr., and he won’t be close to the last.Baumgardner:
Ringo gets beat in ways more seasoned corners don’t, and I wonder if that’s something he’ll grow out of or if that progress will never happen. The Tennessee game was a great example of where Ringo’s at right now: He gave up eight catches on nine targets, but the one he broke up was an outstanding pick on a go route in the end zone. He did not play in 2020, got his feet wet a year ago on one of the best units we’ve ever seen and has had some issues adjusting this year.
I still like him an awful lot, though. When he’s dialed in and has things figured out, he is tough as nails in man coverage. Get him with the right coach in the right system, and you’re likely going to enjoy the results. However, that’s not always how it works. If we’re talking about being CB1 in this draft , the general unease surrounding Ringo right now is understandable. It’s hard to unsee what he’s put on tape so far, both good and bad.
