Despite how many all-time great video games have launched this year, it’s hard to celebrate amid constant layoffs across the industry.
Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom – the top spot on Metacritic is still a tie between the new Zelda and Baldur’s Gate 3 As we approach the end of 2023, and the inevitable game of the year arguments that’ll erupt around December’s The Game Awards, it’s become more apparent that this has been one of the best years for video games in a very long time. Nintendo launched two game of the year contenders with Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom and Super Mario Bros.
As such, some of this year’s games probably would have launched much earlier had the pandemic not happened, but at the same time benefited from extra development time and polish. ‘One of the reasons why it’s such an incredible year is that some of these titles were supposed to release in previous years,’ Le Yaouanq told Axios, adding that developers have had time to get comfortable with the more modern tech of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
