2021 was the 4th warmest year on record for the contiguous U.S., partially fueled by a record warm June and December.
, which was led by the Lower 48's hottest June. December also ranked as the warmest on record dating to 1895.
But not all the months in 2021 saw anomalous warmth, most notably last February, which ranked 19th coldest.Every state in the Lower 48 had above-average temperatures overall in 2021, but areas from the Northeast into portions of the Midwest and West were the warmest when compared to average. Two states - Maine and New Hampshire - had their second-warmest year on record. It was a top-five warmest year for an additional 19 states.
In contrast to the Lower 48, Alaska had its coldest year since 2012. But our nation's 49th state still had an annual temperature in 2021 that was 0.4 degrees Fahrenheit above its long-term average.
