In today’s digital marketplace, many tech experts caution businesses to request software bills of materials from vendors. More and more, software is built using common components from shared libraries, and an SBOM can help a business determine if developers have followed leading cybersecurity, quality and compliance standards.
Look for a list of third-party components and their respective versions. This is paramount, because outdated or vulnerable components can pose significant security risks to the software. By ensuring that all third-party components are up to date and free from known vulnerabilities, businesses can significantly reduce potential security threats. -
Check whether the SBOM was generated dynamically through automation or assembled manually by the vendor. Companies should place a premium on dynamically created SBOMs and ensure the details are complete, relevant and actionable. As with point-in-time assessments, the validity of SBOM data is time-sensitive, and if it’s outdated, it may undermine the core purpose of the SBOM effort itself. -
Businesses should make sure the SBOM reports on open-source licensing as well as whether the software contains code governed by General Public License, Lesser General Public License, Affero General Public License or copyleft licensing. Violating licensing can have a significant impact on an organization if reciprocal publication of the source code is used in any modified versions. On the other hand, permissive software licensing is not a concern.
