The DC Universe has boomed in 2023 with the debut of numerous characters. See what strange and powerful new heroes have made the DCU their home.
It’s been a big year for DC Comics, and while 2023 is only halfway over, there’s already been some amazing additions to the DCU. After the harrowing events of Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths and Lazarus Planet, the Dawn of DC initiative began in earnest and switched up several characters’ status quos.
14 Deadeye Amanda Waller has a lot of secrets, but one of the strangest is the existence of her nephew Archie, aka Deadeye. The character first appeared in Lazarus Planet: Next Evolution where he demonstrated the ability to contact his aunt via the astral plane. Deadeye is also a fantastic assassin, able to fight threats that heavily outweigh him. However, Archie seems to have far more compassion than his infamously cruel aunt.
11 31st Century Justice Society The New Golden Age #1 kicked off with an outrageous crime. Per Degaton was going through the timeline, killing the Justice Societies of different eras. One of the first victims to fall to this massacre was the Justice Society of the 31st Century. While readers don’t get to see them for very long, a Justice Society existing in the same era as the Legion of Super-Heroes is hopefully an idea that will be revisited.
8 City Boy To celebrate AAPI month, DC created its "We Are Legends" line, which featured a collection of books starring Asian heroes, one of which was City Boy. Cameron Kim’s power set is very much like Stormwatch member Jack Hawksmoor’s unique abilities. Cameron is connected to the cities he visits and can do almost anything while in a large metropolis, such as phasing through buildings and creating physical avatars of cities.
5 The Vigil DC has introduced a number of heroes under its new “We Are Legends” line, one of which is the secretive team the Vigil. The team is composed of powerful metahumans like Arclight, who has a mastery of electricity and Twitch, an inhumanly fast fighter. Together, the Vigil goes on missions to protect the world from dangerous technology and the people profiting off of it.
