Grace Chandy has navigated many hurdles in her 11 years. Wheelchair basketball helps her...

When 11-year-old Grace Chandy started complaining about back pain, her mother Judy Chandy thought her heavy backpack, laden with text books, was to blame. Or maybe growing pains were the culprit.

“I knew that something was really wrong," Judy said."Grace was in intense pain, and I couldn’t get her to stand up.” Finally, the neurologist could tell that Grace did indeed have a tethered cord. He said surgery was not an option and recommended more specialists, including pain doctors. A psychologist was suggested. After about three days of Grace’s inability to walk, Judy started calling around in search of a wheelchair. “I was so grateful when I got one and I could wheel Grace around,” she said.

Grace had played basketball during recess and had a hoop at home to practice. She had hopes to join the fifth grade team, the first year the sport is available at her school. Those hopes were dashed. She was most struck by Grace’s form when taking a shot, and she was surprised that Grace had been in a wheelchair for only a short amount of time.

“I can play a sport that I still love,” Grace said. “The first time I went, it felt really intense. After my first practice, I felt good.”That seemed to be the end of her story. Grace was resigned to life in a wheelchair and had found that she could still play the sport that she loved. Her school, Veritas Christian Academy, had rearranged her classes to all be on the first floor. Her friends would fight over who got to push her through the hallways.

The tissue attachments that limit the movement of the spinal cord also cause syrinxes, or fluid-filled cyst, Sandberg said. The pressure exerted by a syrinx can also damage the spinal cord. The condition is often present in birth, as was true for Grace.
