Owner Karen Daley rings up Alyssa Nelson’s selections from the shelves of Island Spice Groceries on Friday, Dec. 16, 2022. The grocery store offers authentic Jamaican products along Trinity Mills Road in Dallas. At the busy shopping plaza at Midway and Trinity Mills roads, you may see folks filling their tanks at a convenience store gas station, beautifying their crowns at a hair-braiding salon, or shopping at one of the regions last-remaining record stores.
“When you’re in New York or Florida, so much of what we sell in our store is readily available, because so many immigrants are in those regions,” Daley says. “But here in Texas, while some grocery store chains have added international food options, the selections are limited. We are meeting a need that hasn’t been readily met in this area.”Daley and her mother relocated to North Texas about two years ago to join Daley’s brother, who’d moved to the area earlier.
The infamous flavor staple that’s truly coming in hot is the habanero’s first cousin — the Scotch bonnet pepper — a featured ingredient in many of these tasty, spicy sauces. Island Spice’s sauce options offer varying heat levels from which to choose, depending on what you think you can handle. According to Daley, these sauces and marinades are top sellers among Jamaicans and others who enjoy Island food flavors.
Dry oxtail seasonings often include cinnamon, allspice, brown sugar, onion, garlic, thyme, salt and scotch bonnet pepper . But Island Spice offers a liquid marinade from Grace Brand, which is a great way to infuse great flavor into meats. I tried this item on oxtail and beef short ribs. You also can use this marinade to help transform a basic Sunday pot roast.“Island roux”
At Island Spice Groceries, customers can grab small, hand-packed parcels of pimento in the spice section to add authenticity to a variety of dishes. And again, you don’t have to be an expert in Jamaican cooking to incorporate ingredients like pimento and other seasonings found on this grocer’s shelves. Freshly-ground pimento would be great in beef stews, atop holiday hams or on roasted squash, cauliflower and root vegetables.
“We eat coco bread with everything!” Daley says. “We eat it with butter or jelly in the morning at breakfast and we even put our meat patties between slices.”Now, let’s talk about Jamaican meat patties. I experienced my first meat patty when I lived in New York. I love the beef and chicken patties, also known as Jamaican empanadas. Island Spice carries the Caribbean Food Delights brand. During my visit, they had a great supply of the spicy beef variety.
