Millions of people will be in the line of fire for the taxman from the start of January
Almost a third of UK workers have found ways of earning extra cash to supplement their income due to the cost of living crisis - but that means they are now in the firing line of HMRC, according to a recent money.co.uk survey. With experts warning of the coming tax crackdown on millions of workers who earn extra money from a side hustle, money.co.uk business loans expert, Cameron Jaques, has cautioned those with side hustles to ensure they’re paying the right amount of tax.
“You must file a self-assessment tax return and pay the tax yourself - it doesn’t automatically come out of your pay packet like with PAYE. If you fail to do this, due to new HMRC rules coming in on January 1, you could find yourself in tax trouble in April 2025. 12 million people register as self-assesment taxpayers with HMRC every year. The system has become busier in recent years as millions of people take up a side hustle - which could be anything from selling content online to retailing crafts on websites or delivering parcels. You also need to register income if you let out a room.
