Why the Rockets are dreaming of Victor Wembanyama (like every other team in the NBA draft lottery)
With the first pick of the 2023 NBA draft, one of 14 teams will be selecting 7-foot-4 center Victor Wembanyama.If Rockets general manager Rafael Stone wanted to take a break from his annual spring spent studying the video of draft prospects, he could simply entertain himself with the eye candy of the prospect who does not need to be studied.
In that light, the Rockets can enjoy imagining how it would look to add Wembanyama to the mix, like buying a lottery ticket and stopping at the Rolls Royce dealership on the way home just to browse. The most immediate question would be if Wembanyama and incumbent center Alperen Sengun can play together. Even the most ardent Sengun devotee with a Twitter account would acknowledge that his presence shouldn't keep the Rockets from picking Wembanyama. And there are ways in which they could complement one another.
Wembanyama is also quite gifted defensively. If the Rockets can add him to the mix, they could have a frontcourt of Wembanyama, Jabari Smith Jr. and Tari Eason, all with potential to be elite defenders. Wembanyama could be the defensive anchor needed behind guards Jalen Green and Kevin Porter Jr.
