Speeders are a fast and reliable method of transportation in the Star Wars galaxy - so why did the stormtroopers ride dewbacks in A New Hope?

The stormtroopers in A New Hope rode dewbacks to search for R2-D2 and C-3PO instead of speeders like in most other Star Wars movies. The logical out-of-universe reason is that George Lucas liked the idea while writing A New Hope, but at first glance, it seems strange that the Empire would use dewbacks. Living creatures would be far slower than a machine and would require food, water, and rest, none of which are easy to come by in a desert.

Speeders are common throughout the other Star Wars movies, but there were occasions when living creatures had to be used instead, such as when the rebels rode Tauntauns on Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back.

Speeders Would Tend To Malfunction On A Desert Planet The Empire could have given the stormtroopers speeders, but these would be more prone to malfunction on a planet like Tatooine. Sand is "coarse and rough and irritating, and it gets everywhere" as Anakin Skywalker would say, and Lucas himself would certainly attest to how difficult sand made filming Star Wars movies in Tunisia.
