Oppenheimer continues its exclusive extended run.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Christopher Nolan's acclaimed Oppenheimer has had an extended run in theaters and won't be released on video-on-demand in the immediate future. The third highest-grossing film of 2023 is still inching toward the converted $1 billion mark at the global box office, having spent more than two consecutive months in theaters.
Oppenheimer is already an early favorite for Best Picture, Best Actor, and a number of other top prizes at the 2024 Academy Awards. While Christopher Nolan's films have consistently been nominated at the Oscars and Golden Globes, the writer/director has notoriously come up short in the most desired categories.
Nolan has famously always been a cinema traditionalist and an adamant proponent against the use of CGI in films. His intentional use of IMAX cameras allowed for one of the few rare IMAX screenings on 70mm film, which tells you everything you need to know about his beliefs on digital content and filmmaking. Nolan has become one of the last living symbols of film shooting and projection, the classic process that had been the industry standard throughout most of film history.
What Oppenheimer's Longer Theatrical Run Means For Its Box Office: How Much Will It Make? The additional benefit of keeping Oppenheimer in theaters is that it has a better projection to become the third film of 2023 to make over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. If Nolan is rewarded with his 90-120 day theatrical run, then it will be a near certainty that he will pass that glorified financial landmark.
Look at its continued performance, where could it end up if it's in theaters for another couple of months?
