May is here, and for many people around the country, it has started off colder and wetter than usual. That means that many of us aren’t getting the chances to apricate we might hope for this time of year. So what does apricate mean? The word means “to bask in the sun.” Originating from the Latin word apricari , its first documented use in English occurred around 1690, when British antiquarian John Aubrey wrote an anecdote about an aristocrat that included the line “His lordship was wont to recreate himself in this place, to apricate and contemplate, with his little dog with him.”
