Members of United Teachers Los Angeles have voted to ratify a tentative agreement with the Los Angeles Unified School District to make indoor masking optional in most educational settings.

its proposal and sought to make masking mandatory at all early education centers and programs serving children under 5, as well as at elementary schools where the student and staff vaccination rate is less than 70%, according to documents that UTLA had shared with its members. But the district rejected the idea of keeping some elementary schools under the mandate.

In another update to its members over the weekend, UTLA said it agreed to the tentative deal to make masks optional in most classrooms despite members indicating that they wished the mandate to remain because “such a compromise was the only way we could win continuation of the weekly testing program for the rest of the current school year.”

“Our health and safety priorities in negotiations with the district were two-fold: to ensure the continuation of the weekly COVID-19 testing program that has helped keep our communities safe and to protect our youngest learners in early education programs who are not able to be vaccinated,” UTLA President Cecily Myart-Cruz said in a statement after the ratification vote results were in. “The agreement achieves both of these critical goals.

In the meantime, Service Employees International Union Local 99 has doubled down on its insistence that the district prematurely announced it will lift its masking mandate this week before completing negotiations with SEIU over the impacts such a change in policy would have on its members. SEIU represents nearly 30,000 classified workers in LAUSD, including special education assistants, bus drivers, food service workers and custodians.
