There is no mechanism for a formal challenge to the Prime Minister's leadership so soon after being handed the role, but the Conservative party's grandees could change its rules at any time

Three out of the last five Conservative leaders have faced a formal confidence vote after the trigger point of 15 per cent of the parliamentary party – currently 54 letters – was reached. Iain Duncan Smith is the only leader to have lost a formal vote of his colleagues.
