University of Houston early-music concert features period instruments -- and fencing
Dunham herself is a double bassist who veered into the world of early music rather serendipitously. While living on the East Coast and performing with the Boston Symphony, someone heard her playing Bach, assumed she specialized in historically informed performance and hired her. She took it upon herself to study the treatises as well as obtain the proper equipment and coaching, and shortly thereafter, she was named a principal player with Boston Baroque, a position she held for nearly 17 years.
Since moving to Houston in 2001 – when her husband, a former violist of the Grammy Award-winning Cleveland Quartet, was offered a professorship at Rice University – Dunham has performed with many local ensembles, served on the faculty at Sam Houston State University, and given back through nonprofit leadership.
For this reason, Sunday’s program, titled “Crossing to the New World: Early and Traditional Music in the British Isles, France and North America,” will include a pre-concert talk and post-concert reception, both open to the public.
