When former President Donald Trump turned himself in to authorities in Fulton County, Georgia, he was required to post $200,000 bail.

Requiring one of the wealthiest and most recognized people on the planet to pay to secure his freedom has drawn attention to the outdated and ineffective practice of cash bail. It also highlights the debate within the Republican Party on an issue that should unite them — and all Americans.

Instead, a person’s freedom is largely dictated by access to funds. Mr. Trump’s financial resources likely allowed him to post any amount of bail, regardless of risk. Reforms like these have won over both Democratic and Republican constituencies — including in venues with a history of tough-on-crime policing and prosecution. In Harris County, Texas, for instance, conservative advocates and law enforcement leaders supported bail reforms that reduced incarceration rates while maintaining public safety.

“It offended me that we were running a debtor’s prison,” Mr. Christie said of the reform’s passage. “It is also wrong to have folks committing violent crime and go back out to commit more crimes. None of it is acceptable.”
