Nothing is slowing former President Donald Trump’s march to the GOP nomination.
In the latest Emerson College Polling survey out Wednesday, Trump now has the biggest national lead since Emerson started testing the 2024 race in June 2022, 15 months ago.Emerson said that there was a “Trump bump” in the latest survey that showed him supported by 59% of Republican voters. Second is Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis at 12% followed by Vivek Ramaswamy at 7%, Chris Christie and Mike Pence with 5%, Nikki Haley with 3%, and Tim Scott with 2%. Five percent are undecided.
In its review, Emerson said:"The September Emerson College Polling national survey of U.S. voters finds former President Donald Trump with a 47-point lead over his closest competitor in the Republican presidential primary, his largest lead since tracking this race in June 2022. Trump’s support increased 9 points since last month’s national poll."
Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said, “The Trump voter remains resilient, and despite a dip in August’s post-debate poll, Trump has now expanded his lead and has improved his position from before the first debate." But just as no GOP challenger appears able to catch Trump in national polls, nothing is changing the outcome of head-to-head general election surveys pitting Trump against President Joe Biden. In Emerson’s latest, it remains a dead heat with 45% for both.Still, Kimball found that Biden’s health is hanging over voters, suggesting any further decline could impact the final vote.
“Republican and independent voters think Biden’s age makes the job of president too difficult, at 79% and 54% respectively, while only a third of Democrats say the same,” Kimball said. “Of those who think Biden’s age makes the job too difficult, 67% plan to vote for Trump in a general election, while 21% would vote for Biden and 12% are unsure,” Kimball added.
