The new Paramount+ show by Sheridan and producer Chad Feehan details the quest to tell the story of a “dime novel hero.”
Paramount+ is promoting its Western drama, "Lawmen: Bass Reeves," with this tintype-style photo of Bass Reeves as played by David Oyelowo. Feehan, a native of Houston, said in a promotional release that stories of Reeves reminded him of a “dime novel hero with incredibly fanciful flourishes of a gunslinging lawman pursuing the most-hardened outlaws in the Wild West.”as Reeves, one of the first Black deputy U.S. marshals west of the Mississippi River. Reeves was credited for the arrests of over 3,000 outlaws during his career, according to a Paramount+ release.
Feehan, the show’s creator, showrunner and writer, said he learned of Reeves over dinner with Oyelowo and sought information on the lawman.“I became obsessed with what I didn’t know, with all of the nooks and crannies of Bass’ remarkable life that aren’t regularly shared, as well as with revisiting the often-told tales through a now-adult lens,” he said.
