Willa Bennet is a neckwear connoisseur.
It can take people years to figure out their signature look. At 27, Willa Bennett has her look down pat. The associate director of social media atarrives every day to work dapper, polished, and with a tie perfectly cinched around her neck. And Bennett doesn’t have to worry about options. She has plenty of ties—more than 100.
Bennett, who was a ballerina growing up, had adhered to feminine style but was never drawn to frills and froufrou. While in high school, she began wearing menswear, specifically oversized blazers, alongside her leotards and tutus. “The uniform for ballet class was never for me, but I loved dancing,” she says. “So I made it work.” She eventually ventured into collecting ties, starting with a navy blue Ralph Lauren tie that she found at a vintage store.
While Bennett has been wearing ties for more than a decade, she’s right on trend. For fall 2022, Louis Vuitton sent its models out in large pants and hulking jackets along with floral-print ties akin to fancy upholstery. “I love that look,” Bennett says. However her ultimate inspiration is Avril Lavigne. “I think it’s because she was a woman who wore ties when I was growing up. I remember I used to see her in magazines and rip out the pages,” says Bennett.
