The Marvels is surpassed only by Avengers movies.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Disney recently released The Marvels budget, revealing it to be the most expensive non-Avengers Marvel Cinematic Universe movie yet. Captain Marvel may be poised to take on a more central role in the new Avengers movies, making her second non-Avengers outing pretty pivotal.
According to Forbes, The Marvels' budget was disclosed by Disney as part of their company filings on Sept. 19. The filings showed that the studio spent $274.8 million on making the movie up until September 2022. Following a $50 million subsidy from the UK government, this means that The Marvels will need to gross $439.6 million to break-even.
While $270 million is a hefty budget, it does follow a trend with recent big-ticket releases in the MCU. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Thor: Love & Thunder, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 each had production budgets of $250 million, placing them just below The Marvels. The only non-Avengers Infinity Saga release to match this budget was Captain America: Civil War, which also grossed over $1 billion worldwide, though it did feature a number of Avengers characters.
This does mean, however, that Disney might be looking to break that $1 billion mark once again. Avengers: Age of Ultron, widely considered to be the worst Avengers movie so far, grossed nearly $1.4 billion worldwide, while Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame drew in $2 billion and $2.8 billion worldwide, respectively.
