Totaling more than 68,000 acres, new parkland is slated for North and West Texas, the Gulf Coast and Hill Country.

In 2019, voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 5, which directs sales-tax revenue from sporting goods to Texas parks. The Texas Legislature is now considering setting aside $1 billion to create theHere’s a look at the six new state parks.About 75 miles west of Fort Worth in the tiny town of Strawn, a 5,000-acre swath of Texas ranchland is poised to become the region’s first new state park in 25 years.

Near Del Rio in Southwest Texas, the new Dan A. Hughes Unit of Devils River State Natural Area lies at the intersection of three diverse ecological areas — theto the west, Edwards Plateau to the north, and Tamaulipan shrublands to the south and east. Just 13 miles downriver from the existing Del Norte Unit, the new 18,000-acre area will offer opportunities for swimming, fishing, paddling, hiking and biking. It’s expected to open in early 2024.

The new Dan A. Hughes Unit of Devils River State Natural Area lies at the intersection of three diverse ecological areas — the Chihuahuan Desert to the west, Edwards Plateau to the north, and Tamaulipan shrublands to the south and east.This natural area is nestled in pristine Texas Hill Country land near Bourne. The Kronkosky family started buying the property north of San Antonio in 1946.
