A Dallas County jury sentenced Jedidiah Murphy to death for carjacking and fatally shooting Bertie Lee Cunningham in 2000.
“They wondered if maybe she’d just wandered off,” Shelton said at the time. “But she’s not like that. She’s very sharp, very active and outgoing. She’s a very young 80.”According to court records, Cunningham was on her way home when Murphy forced her to give him a ride at gunpoint. After about 30 minutes, he put her into the trunk of her car, where he shot her in the head. Murphy later dumped Cunningham’s body in a creek and used her credit cards to buy alcohol and cigarettes.
We were deemed things, and not people at all. My childhood withered and died within those walls, and the things that were stolen there could never be returned to me again. Murphy attempted suicide and, after his recovery, completed a court-ordered program for alcoholism. He started drinking again the day it was over.
You never know what can break you until you’re falling apart, and you never miss your shadow until you’re lost in the dark. You can’t know how sweet it is to breathe until you’ve had your ribs broken, and you cannot appreciate being happy until someone makes you cry. There’s no point in blaming yourself for the kicking life gives you. What it taught me was to think about how much it hurt, and how much you don’t want to feel that way ever again.
Last week, a clemency petition to the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles asking for his sentence to be commuted, or his execution to be delayed, was denied.garnered more than 7,000 signatures, posing the question: “Should the State of Texas kill someone that they clearly failed time and time again as a child?”
