Officials said the synthetic form of a plant-based substance could provide cost-effective treatment in impoverished countries if drug companies commit to making the product widely available.

Scientists with the Southwest Research Institute and UTSA have developed a method to synthesize highly potent derivatives of the antimalarial drug artemisinin, which could lead to a more cost-effective treatment against the deadly disease. Malaria caused about 619,000 deaths worldwide in 2021.San Antonio researchers have developed a new way to produce an antimalarial drug that could save thousands of lives from one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases.

t is derived from the sweet wormwood plant, whose scientific name is Artemisia annua, and most successful treatments for the mosquito-borne parasitic infection utilize it. The plant is found most commonly in Asia but is vulnerable to insects and extreme weather. The process of isolating the drug is time-consuming.according to the World Health Organization“Our method mimics the biosynthetic pathway of how artemisinin is made in the plant where it originates, Artemisia annua.
