Susana's parents, who obtained their undergraduate degrees in Colombia, took whatever work they could find: Her father peddled shaved ice; her mother cleaned houses. Susana learned English at school. But in her thrift store outfits and well-worn Skechers, she understood America in ways her parents couldn't. Even as a child, she seemed aware of how her family craved luxuries that would never be theirs.
