BREAKING: The Supreme Court decided the fate of President Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan, striking it down Friday in one of the biggest decisions of the term.
The plan’s only hope for moving forward appeared to be if the court had found that the Republican-led states and individuals challenging the plan had lacked the legal right to sue.The plan would have erased or decreased student loan balances for an estimated 43 million borrowers if it had moved forward. The plan was estimated to cost the government more than $400 billion in lost debt repayment.
Conservative justices holding the Supreme Court’s majority seemed ready to sink President Joe Biden’s plan to wipe away or reduce student loans held by millions of Americans. In arguments lasting more than three hours in February, Chief Justice John Roberts led his conservative colleagues in questioning the administration’s authority to broadly cancel federal student loans because of the COVID-19 emergency.
