Sudan's army chief gives initial approval to regional African bloc IGAD's proposal to extend truce for 72 more hours and send an envoy to South Sudan capital, Juba, for talks to end fighting against paramilitary RSF

The proposal suggests sending both an army and Rapid Support Forces [RSF] envoys to Juba to discuss the details. The Sudanese armed forces and RSF previously agreed to a three-day ceasefire that was due to expire late on Thursday. There was no immediate response from the RSF to the proposal from the IGAD, a regional bloc.

In southern Khartoum, machine gun fire was reported near one of the homes owned by paramilitary commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who has led the heavily armed RSF into fight against the armed forces under army chief Burhan.

Several previous cease-fires declared since the April 15 outbreak of fighting were not observed. However, intermittent lulls during the weekend’s major Muslim holiday enabled evacuations of hundreds of diplomats, aid workers and other foreigners by air and land. For many Sudanese, the departure of foreigners was a terrifying sign that international powers expect a worsening of the fighting.
